FIDYAH AND RANSOM FOR MISSED FASTS

Fidyah is applicable to those who, due to valid reasons such as chronic illness or advanced age, are unable to fast during Ramadan and will not be able to make up the missed fasts later. The current fidyah amount is fixed at $5 USD per missed day of fasting, calculated based on the cost of feeding one person two meals for a day.

For example: • If you missed 5 days of fasting, the total fidyah would be $25 USD (5 days × $5 USD).

FIDYAH FOR MISSED FASTS (ON BEHALF OF THE DECEASED)

If a deceased person was unable to fast due to illness, old age, or other valid reasons and has passed away, a ransom (fidyah) must be paid on their behalf to fulfill their religious obligation. This ensures that their missed fasts are compensated, and we pray that Allah grants them forgiveness and mercy.

According to Islamic teachings, fidyah is required for all the days the deceased may have missed, including days of doubt. If the exact number is unknown, it is advisable to calculate a cautious average to ensure full compensation.

EXAMPLE FIDYAH CALCULATION:

• Estimated fasting debt from age 50 to 80

• 30 years × 30 days per year = 900 days

• 1 fidyah = $5 USD per day

• Total fidyah: 900 days × $5 USD = $4,500 USD

WHAT ABOUT MENSES (HAIDH) DAYS?

Fasts missed during Ramadan due to menstruation are normally made up (qada’) after Ramadan; in this case, no ransom (fidyah) is required. If it is uncertain whether the fasts have been made up, a precautionary ransom can be given, based on an average of 6-7 days per Ramadan over the years. (If uncertain, it is recommended to calculate based on 7 days for each Ramadan until the age of menopause.)

For a deceased woman, if the age of menopause is unknown, the calculation should be made up to her age at death.

If you are unsure, you may choose a slightly higher estimate; any excess is considered as sadaqah and will be a source of light for the deceased.

Your ransom helps deliver food and supplies to individuals and families in need; it reflects the spirit of compassion and mercy.
